dreadlock update

dreadlock update

on may 2, 2008, i got my third set of dreadlocks started. the first two sets started as braids that i let grow out and at the base of each braid was where the dreadlocks started. this set i did differently. i went to a salon that specialized in making dreads and they twisted real hair extensions into my hair over a 9 hour process. the idea is that the additional hair helps the matting process and new growth would be matted. some of the extensions slipped out about 6 months in but a lot of them are still there and pretty much matted into the mix. i’m trying to dread the loose ends with backcombing and wax, but i may just trim them off at some point. so i’m 16 months in and pretty satisfied with the growth, especially in the back.

Looks great, Drew. A year ago I went to Burning Man with fake dreads braided into my hair. It was meant to be temporary “burner hair,” but you know how the playa can be on hair. When I got home I found that my hair was all matted and dreaded at the top of the braids and rather than spending several hours combing them out I decided to just leave it. In the following year they turned into a nice set of dreadlocks. And all it cost me was a week in the desert.

You can round off the tips by felting them using a hook needle, see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3r_4dzYzsM&feature=player_embedded
